9 Earth month activities you can easily do

Earth day April Month

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd every year, and it’s a reminder that we need to take care of our planet. However, we don't have to wait for Earth Day to make a difference. There are plenty of activities we can do year-round to help protect the environment. Here are six Earth month activities you can easily do:

1.0 Start composting

Composting is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint and turn your food waste into nutrient-rich soil for plants. You can compost food scraps, yard waste, and even some paper products. Composting can be done in a backyard, on a balcony, or even inside your home with a small countertop compost bin. By composting, you’re not only reducing the amount of waste that goes to the landfill, but you’re also creating a valuable resource for your garden.

2.0 Reduce your plastic usage

Plastic is a major source of pollution, and it’s estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Reducing your plastic usage is a simple but effective way to help the environment. You can start by bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, using a refillable water bottle instead of buying bottled water, and avoiding single-use plastic straws and utensils. By making these small changes, you can significantly reduce your plastic waste.

3.0 Less Screen Time, More Green Time

Studies suggest that the more time you spend in front of a screen, the less you feel connected to the environment. Swap time in front of your TV for an hour-long walk or time in the garden.

4.0 Use Energy Saving Light Bulbs

If we each replaced one bulb in our home with an energy-saving light bulb, we’d save enough energy to power 3 million homes for a year. Image if you replace more than one bulb how much energy you can save? And ultimately use less resources. Everyone can make a difference.

5.0 Plant A Vegetable

Planting a whole vegetable garden might be too much to do in a day. But one vegetable? Easy! Consider planting a tomato, potato, or carrot, or using one seed packet to create a very manageable ‘garden’ of one or a few plants. Plant what you will enjoy.

6.0 Participate in a beach or park cleanup

Littering and pollution are major issues for our beaches and parks. Participating in a beach or park cleanup is a great way to help protect these important natural resources. You can organize your own cleanup or participate in one organized by a local organization. During the cleanup, you’ll be collecting litter and debris, which can harm wildlife and ecosystems. By participating in a cleanup, you’re helping to preserve these areas for future generations.

7.0 Shop local and sustainable

Supporting local businesses and buying sustainably sourced products is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. By purchasing products that are locally sourced, you’re reducing the carbon emissions associated with transportation. Additionally, choosing sustainably sourced products ensures that the materials used were harvested in an environmentally responsible way. Look for certifications such as Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, or FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) to ensure that the products you’re buying meet high environmental and ethical standards.

8.0 Plant a tree

Trees are essential for the health of our planet. They absorb carbon dioxide, provide oxygen, and support biodiversity. Planting a tree is a simple but meaningful way to contribute to the environment. You can plant a tree in your backyard or participate in a community tree-planting event. Not only will you be helping the environment, but you’ll also be creating a beautiful and valuable addition to your landscape.

9.0 Use public transportation or carpool

Transportation is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. By using public transportation or carpooling, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. If you live in an area with good public transportation, consider taking the bus or train to work or school. If you need to drive, try carpooling with coworkers or friends. Not only will you be reducing your carbon footprint, but you’ll also save money on gas and parking.

Small Things Make A Big Difference

There are many ways to help protect the environment. By reducing your plastic usage, composting, planting a tree, shopping local and sustainably, using public transportation or carpooling, and participating in a beach or park cleanup, you can make a difference. These are just a few examples of simple activities you can do to contribute to the health of our planet. So, let’s all do our part to protect the environment and create a sustainable future for generations to come. The small things we do each day help us to take steps towards more eco-friendly living. Happy Earth Month everyone, we hope these easy earth month activities inspire you for the rest of the year and beyond.

Why not start this Earth Month with 1 or 2 of the activities above?
