How to Dry Brush your Face

Face brushing is the experts’ shortcut to glowing and smooth-looking skin. Here’s everything you need to know about Dry Brushing your Face, including the best techniques and how to dry brush your face like a pro.

What is dry brushing?

Beauty experts have been talking about the ancient & Ayurvedic science of dry brushing for the last decade. And now the same ritual is being applied to the skin on our faces. Like mini body brushes, but with much softer bristles, as the skin is much more delicate on your face than on the rest of your body. Facial dry brushes are used on dry skin after cleansing to exfoliate and peel and to boost circulation and lymphatic drainage. It is helping to de-puff and define the face by gentle repetitive strokes. Similar to body brushing, it sweeps away dead skin cells so gently that it is also suitable for sensitive skin, too. But do use softer bristles for your face to gently only exfoliate the upper layer of your skin without damaging your skin barrier.

How to dry brush your face like an expert?

“My favourite step at a beautician, is when they use a brush with rounded heads for creating a circular skin-flicking action”, states our founder Sarah. Start from the décolleté and move over your neck to your face in small circulate motions or long strokes. Continue to work the brush upwards and outwards until you’ve buffed it over the entire face, making sure to avoid the delicate eye area. Our founder Sarah spends three minutes every morning doing this before continuing with her normal facial routine and applies the newest Aura Hydrating Essence Fivefold and the Everyday+ Glow Elixir and says it becomes “a holistic, meditative part” of her skincare regime. Allowing her to take some deep breaths before stating into her day.

How to incorporate dry brushing in your skin routine?

To incorporate dry brushing into your own morning or evening routines, begin as you normally would, with either a cleanse. Pat your skin dry and then use your facial brush using the technique described by Sarah. Don’t be alarmed if your skin flushes and becomes a little red – it’s just evidence of your blood coming to the surface of your skin. Next, follow with your usual serums, oils and moisturizers. You can also apply a mask before continuing with your facial routine.

Dry face brushes are not to be confused with cleansing brushes. These are most often electrically powered and are designed to be used in conjunction with cleansers to deep clean, exfoliate and soften skin.

Is dry brushing your face right for your skin?

Most skin types will benefit from some gentle dry brushing, even if it’s just once a week to stimulate lymphatic drainage. But if you have very dry skin, brushing might dry it out even more by over-exfoliating the skin’s protective barrier. If your skin ever feels tight, irritated and sensitised after brushing, pause and build up your skin barrier first before continuing with dry brushing. Likewise, for skin prone to inflammation, including rosacea and acne, brushing can irritate and exacerbate it and so it’s best avoided. Otherwise, sensitive skin can also benefit from this skin routine.
